The following are a collection of funeral quotes I have collected over the years for funeral and memorial services. I like to include funeral quotes in the eulogy, as a lead-in to addressing the character of the deceased. Often famous quotes express our thoughts with smooth eloquence in ways that are much easier and superior to what we can invent on our own.
Even death is not to be feared by one who has lived wisely.
The following are excellent quotes to lead into the charitable, generous attributes of the deceased.
"The service we render to others is really the rent we pay for our room on this earth. It is obvious that man is himself a traveler; that the purpose of this world is not 'to have and to hold' but 'to give and to serve'". Sir Wilfred Grinfell
"One life on this earth is all that we get, whether it is enough or not enough, and the obvious conclusion would seem to be that at the very least we are fools if we do not live it as fully and bravely and beautifully as we can." Frederick Buechner
"This is the miracle that happens every time to those who really love; the more they give, the more they possess." Rainer Maria Rilke
"Perhaps the secret of living well is not in having all the answers but in pursuing unanswerable questions in good company." Rachel Naomi Remen
Here is another funeral quote on generosity;
"That best portion of a good man's life, his little nameless unrememberd acts of kindness and of love." William Wordsworth
The following funeral quote is suitable for when life has thrown a curve ball, such as a terminal illness:
"Plan your future, but do it in pencil." Jon Bon Jovi
The following is a quote to address the fact that the deceased had issues in their life;
"The only normal people are the ones you don't know very well."
Just as a candle cannot burn without fire,
men cannot live without a spiritual life.
On life's journey faith is nourishment, virtuous deeds are a shelter, wisdom is the light by day and right mindfulness is the protection by night. If a man lives a pure life, nothing can destroy him.
Grief remains one of the few things that has the power to silence us.
- Anna Quindlen
We are not content to pass away entirely from the scenes of
our delight; we would leave, if but in gratitude, a pillar and a legend.

My idea of man's chief end was to enrich the world with

Hold you in the palm of his hand.
Death leaves a heartache no one can heal;
Love leaves a memory no one can steal

Say not in grief 'he is no more' but live in thankfulness that he was
- Hebrew proverb
Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift, which is why it is called the present
